Carrie

After several years of working in administrative positions and then 6 years at home with my oldest two children, I decided on a major career change. Midwifery had always appealed to me but I never had the confidence to do it until I had my children. Giving birth was one of the most empowering experiences of my life and the catalyst that I needed to take the steps to changing my career. I live in Mid Lothian with my husband and our three children and had my third baby, my first home waterbirth, in January 2007 and can honestly say that although I was always a supporter of home birth, having one myself has made me an even bigger fan! Giving birth at home with friends and known midwives around me made my labour and birth experience truly enjoyable.

I was privileged enough to do all my community training with a team who all shared my philosophy of birth being a normal physiological event and they gave me the confidence to develop my practice as a real midwife. The team did lots of homebirths and I was lucky enough to attend several with them. This fuelled my passion for home birth and showed me that this was definitely the way I wanted to practice. I have a particular interest in waterbirth and have attended several of these. Working independently allows me to work with woman on a one-to-one basis which is such a satisfying way to work.

I am registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and am bound by the Code of Professional Conduct and the Midwives Rules and Standards. I am a member of the Independent Midwives Association, Association for Improvements in Maternity Services, Royal College of Midwives and am a local representative for the Association of Radical Midwives.

As an Independent midwife I am happy to support women planning a homebirth, on dry land or in water. I can attend as a birth support partner should transfer to hospital be necessary or should you be planning a hospital birth. It is occasionally possible to negotiate an honorary contract to work as a midwife in hospital.
